Our History

A committee of Black community leaders was formed and organized the Ardmore Negro Chamber of Commerce in 1941, and functioned until 1956.

Through their efforts, the Community Center was built in 1948. The contractor was J.B. White & sons at a cost of $46,000. To build the basement section would cost an additional $3,000. The east side community center raised the basement section monies.

The Community Center Pool was built in 1955-56, and was open for use in the summer of 1956.

The name of the Ardmore Negro Chamber of Commerce organization was changed to the Eastside Community Association in 1957. We became an agency of the United Fund of Ardmore in the same year. On December 5, 1988, the city officials of Ardmore changed the name of the Eastside Community Center to the H.F.V. Wilson Community Center in honor of one of Ardmore's most outstanding Black civic and community leaders. Mr. Wilson was the principal of Ardmore Douglass High School and the first Black to be elected as superintendent in Oklahoma.
